Using the Strings, you can choose different string sounds, and play one or several strings at once. You can play notes, chords, and rhythm patterns, and play either legato, bowed, or pizzicato.
Choose a string sound
- Tap the Navigation button in the control bar, tap the Sounds button, then tap the string sound you want to play. You can also swipe left or right on the Sounds button to change to the previous or next string sound.
Play different string instruments
- When you open the Strings in Chords view, all string instruments are active. Tap the Controls button , then tap the instrument or instruments you want to turn off. Tap them again to turn them back on.
Play chords
- Tap the Chord Strips button to switch to Chords view.
- Do any of the following:
- Play a chord with bowing: Touch and hold a segment of a chord strip, then swipe up and down. Swiping faster or slower plays the chord louder or softer.
- Play a chord staccato (arco): Quickly swipe a segment of a chord strip.
- Play a chord pizzicato: Tap a segment of a chord strip.When playing pizzicato, the chord plays when you lift your finger.
You can add your own custom chords to play.
Play a rhythm pattern
- Tap the Controls button , then turn the Autoplay knob to one of the numbered positions.
- Tap a chord strip. Tapping a different chord strip plays the same pattern with the notes of that chord, and tapping with two or three fingers plays variations of the pattern.To access the full chord strip, tap the Controls button again.
- Tap the chord strip again to stop the pattern playing.

Play individual notes
In Notes view, you can play individual notes on a single string instrument.
- Tap the Chord Strips button to switch to Notes view.
- Tap the Controls button , tap the instrument you want to play, then tap the Controls button again.
- Do any of the following:
- Play notes legato: Touch and hold a string.
- Play notes short legato: Tap a string.
- Play notes with bowing: Touch and hold the Articulation button on the left, then swipe a string up and down.

- Lock the Articulation button: Double-tap the Articulation button. Double-tap it again to unlock it.
- To play notes of a particular scale, tap the Scale button , then tap the scale you want to play.The fingerboard changes to show note bars. Play the notes of the scale as described in Step 3.

Step 1: First you need to go to Garageband and when you open it, you can see many projects. In the left side, you can see the option for “Learn to Play”. When you click it, a new screen will appear where different instruments options are given, like Guitar, Piano and so on. If by default guitar is chosen, in the main panel you can see one option – Intro to Guitar. Double click on it.
Step 2: Intro to Guitar allows you to learn about the basic elements like the variations in electric and other guitars, how to tune it, hold it and about chords. This video tutorial also allows you to skip between the chapters and you can control its playback, volume adjustment. Looping, slow play and so on.
Step 3: You can also connect to Mac for having more in-depth learning. For this, you need to click on the Setup option seen on the top right-hand side of the screen. Go to My input device and from its drop down menu, you can select Built-in mic. You can do this only when you are using Mac mini.

Step 4: In the setup screen, you can also see another option called Monitor. When you learn and play, Garageband amplifies your learning using speakers. This can cause to huge noise and can disturb your learning. To avoid this, Monitor is used
Step 5: When you start, tune your guitar. For this, click on Tuner and it will open a new screen where you will see bars on both side of a letter. You have to play the strings and the middle letter will turn to blue. Your high or low notes on the bars are visible on the screen.
Step 6: You can now go to the video part. When you click on Play option, the video will give a tutorial about how to play E chord. While playing, you can also record the session using the record button. Your playing and progress in it will be scored by the app, for good- Green , Out of time- Yellow and Bad notes- Red.
Step 7: When you are done with the first lesson, you can click on “X” option seen on the top left side. This will direct you to the main menu. When you select lesson store on the left side, you have to choose guitar from the three options given there. On the top, you can see three free lesson packs, from which click on Guitar.
